SPIRIT is a moving and inspiring story set to opera. It is centered around a 7 til 9 evening class for a group of people passionate about the empowering quality of the works of Maya Angelou. Each of the 8 class-members relates their personal stories relative to the reading material and the subsequent dynamics of the interactions between them causes both friction and bonding. They each have what becomes a relationship to Maya through her writings and this is manifested in the 'Spirit' of Maya who is represented by one of the principle singers. For one member of the class, there is a tragic end-of-term, shocking the rest of the class. This becomes the catalyst for personal change within each of the class-member's lives, the catalyst that helps them find their wings.
